Marjorie Bennett posted a condolence

To the Laing and Bennett families,
We were so saddened to hear of Barbara's passing. Barbara was a first cousin to my late husband, Colin but she was so much more than a cousin to him. We always looked forward to her visits to Newfoundland. She was a remarkable lady and we all loved her dearly. After Colin passed away Barbara always kept in touch especially at Christmas time.
May your many wonderful memories help to fill the void that you feel. Thinking of you all. God Bless.
Lots of love,
Marjorie Bennett and family

Oh my, Auntie Baabaa, I can’t believe this day has arrived! We always knew it would, but none-the-less it’s heart-wrenching and difficult to accept. You’ve always held a special place in my life. Maybe because I shared a birthday with your wonderful husband, Uncle Mac, or maybe because of the common interest in our family roots, genealogy and the tracking our ancestry with unbounded curiosity.
My earliest recollections go back to the 1960s when you, Uncle Mac and family would make that arduous journey from hometown Wawa all the way to Newfoundland for a few brief days of gathering with family & friends before packing up and returning, just as though it was a weekend getaway! A few years later, 1970, my brother Jim & I stopped at Wawa for a couple of nights while driving from Alberta to Nfld. We were just teenagers at 16 & 17 years of age, and we were treated to the best hospitality ever, including a round of golf with Uncle Mac and sneaking a couple of beer in the process! Later in 1977, while job hunting across Northen Ontario, with my friend Ray, we indulged in comfy beds, hot showers and fabulous meals. You were the BEST! We got together in 2007 along with 300 or so Benoits/Bennetts for a reunion in Nova Scotia searching out French, English and Indigenous roots. In 2012 again in Nfld. for my parents 60th wedding anniversary, and lastly when my wife Darlene and I came through Wawa on a 3-month cross-Canada/US RV odyssey in 2018. The months and years in between visits were sustained with emails covering local events and searching out dates and links to our ancestry. Christmas cards from you were never just a card, but an annual update of the latest events related to your family, all spelled out and literally bursting with pride over individual and specific accomplishments of the kids & grandkids. In recent years, email gave us instant connection, and my many saved emails are documentation of your interest in family, past and present. I will no longer get the emails, apologetic for bothering me so much, nor will I get the birthday, anniversary and other event reminders that were so important in your world. I’ll miss that. You have been so much a part of who I’ve become as a person, and for that I can only be thankful. May you rest in eternal peace, knowing yours was a life well lived. With much love, your nephew, Paul, and wife Darlene.
