BAIN, Mabel - It is with heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of Mabel Bain, on January 2, 2024, at the age of 62, in Chapleau, Ontario.

Beloved wife of the late John William Bain, Mabel was the proud daughter of Henry and Antoinette McKay (nee Bear). She is survived by her son Levon McKay as well as sisters Dorothy, Veronica, Delvina and Francine, and predeceased by sisters Geraldine and Jacqueline, and brothers Henry Jr., Harvey, and Anthony.

Mabel's passing will be especially grieved by her sister-in-law Marjorie Cachagee Lee (Roy), step-children Ursula Abel, Ron (Linda), Diane, Darlene Geauvreau (Alex) Debra (Bronson), and their families. She is predeceased by step-children Tom and Anne-Marie. Also left behind in sorrow is Mabel and John’s beloved cat “Peanut”.

She will be greatly missed by her only surviving Aunt, Margaret Spence, Uncle, Harvey Bear Sr., as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Over the 35 years together, Mabel and John enjoyed spending time in nature, camping, hunting, and fishing on the land. Originally from the Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba, Mabel later became a member of the Chapleau Cree First Nation. She enjoyed playing bingo, thrifting, attending local events in the Town of Chapleau and participating in traditional activities at Chapleau Cree FN. For many years, Mabel was a talented Indigenous crafter, producing many beautifully designed and intricately beaded cultural items.

The family sends their special thanks to Nicki Reid and the staff at Aboriginal Peoples Alliance of Northern Ontario (APANO) for their care and support of Mabel following John's passing in November 2023.
