Gord was my Mom, Betty's first cousin. Being closer to my age, I always thought of he and Gail as my first cousins.
Obvious to all of us, Gord, at a relatively young age, had a passion for family, friends and knowledge.
We didn't get to see him as much as we wanted, and will miss his humor and zest for life.
Lynn Dee, Matthew and Heather, we are so sorry you lost him way too soon.
Thank you for streaming the Celebration Service so those of us unable to travel could be part of the day.
Love Angela

I first met Gord in 1976 when we both worked at the OMNR Lindsay District office on short term contracts. After 1976 we did not cross paths again until 1982 when Cathy and I moved to Wawa. Gord had arrived in Wawa a year earlier as the District Biologist.
We quickly resumed our friendship which turned into a family bond especially after Gord and Lynn Dee got together. Cathy and I stood up for them when they married. They became Uncle Gord and Auntie Lynn Dee to our children (Andrew and Paul) and we became Auntie Cathy and Uncle Marcel to Matthew and Heather.
In 1992 the OMNR under went a major reorganization which included cutting a significant number of positions. My position as fisheries management officer, a technical position, was cut from the organization chart. I was reassigned as an area biologist on a trial basis and given a number of targets to achieve in order to remain in the position.
Those targets focused on forest management planning, wildlife management planning etc. Processes where I had very little background let alone the required expertise. It was a sink or swim situation for me. Without hesitation Gord became my mentor. He spent countless hours bringing me up to speed on these planning processes often on his own time. Gord mentored many young biologists both during and after his career at OMNR.
Gord was an accomplished biologist/ecologist respected by all who knew him. He was the ultimate problem solver when it came to restoring and maintaining wildlife populations or ecological systems. He never applied the solutions found in ministry policies or guidelines without improving on them.
Gord was a man of impeccable character and respected by all who knew him. We will miss his friendship, kindness, honesty, integrity, humility and most of all his sense of humour and mischievous smile.
Back in the day when we all got unsolicited scam telephone calls Gord would ask the caller if their mother knew what they did for a living. There is no doubt that Gord’s mother and the rest of his family knew what Gord did for a living and that they were all very proud of Gord and his work.
Gord’s stories will continue to be part of many conversations.
We will miss you and may you rest in peace.
Our condolences to Lynn Dee, Matthew, Heather, Gord’s sister Gail and Gord’s extended family.

Lynn Dee, Matthew, and Heather,
Gord's passion for the natural world, whether it was for the conservation of moose and caribou or preserving the supercanopy old growth trees in the forest, was always his compass. He was very wise and ahead of his time in his thinking about conservation biology.
He loved to share and educate both his coworkers and the public about wildlife. Work was sometimes interrupted by Gord's "walkabout" with an unfortunately expired owl. He delighted in showing us how the owl's offset ears enabled it to locate its prey in the dark. He was extremely knowledgeable and curious about all wildlife, and revelled in sharing this with everyone.
Gord's keen sense of humour and his quips or jokes made us giggle. His impish grin and chuckle let us know he enjoyed story telling too. He was a good juggler!
Upon retirement, he was often seen out walking his beloved terriers, first Bran, and more recently, Bebop. He loved his family and often mentioned you in conversation.
Gord's legacy to conservation biology was much admired. HIs expertise and knowledge of woodland caribou and moose was extensive. He was often consulted by other wildlife managers.
Gord will be missed, and well-remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
With our sincere condolences,
Wendy LeClair and Barry Matechuk

Lynn Dee, Matthew, Heather:
I am so sad to hear about your loss.
Gord was a remarkable man, who represented Canada very well on the world stage with his moose expertise, a credit to his profession and to the Ministry of Natural Resources. You must be so proud of him.
I had the pleasure of working with Gord on several projects in the park. It was an absolute honour to have had those opportunities with him over the years. I remember an extremely knowledgeable and hard working Biologist with a keen sense of humour and a smile on his face. One such example that I will never forget was at a meeting with some young Foresters regarding caribou corridors. He scribbled a note to me that said “watch this”. Then, with a straight face Gord said….”Forestry, huh, such an exact science you can drive a Mack truck through the holes in it”. The young lads didn’t know how to respond, then Gord smiled and let them off the hook.
Gord leaves a lasting legacy that highlights his sincere dedication to the natural world around us. He will be missed.
Please accept our sincere condolences.

Lynn Dee, Matthew, Heather and family,
Your tribute to Gord is so beautiful and spot on. I started working at the MNR in 1990 as the Fish & Wildlife Clerk where I met Gord as a team mate. As an outsider, he made me feel welcomed to my new work family. His quirky sense of humour was always funny (although sometimes his humour had to be explained to me - my French roots were a hurdle). I can hardly recall any instances where he wasn’t his happy self (even when there were dead rotting mice in his wall and the smell was nearly unbearable). Gord was a dedicated biologist and his goal was always to protect our resources. Fast forward to Ontario’s second big province-wide strike in 2008 - his presence on the strike line made our fight that much easier to get through those 8 weeks. He wasn’t very good at some administrative tasks like cashing in strike cheques or filling in his timesheets. The strike allowed us to get to know each other better and get to know each other outside of our work place. During that strike is when Gord started to call me sister Hélène and he became brother Gord since we were part of the big OPSEU family. That greeting between us continued every single time we met after his retirement.
Gord is an unforgettable person - I will never forget his part in my life. I will miss him and so many other people will as well.
His legacy will live on, you guys have much to be proud of…
Please know that we share your grief and offer our sincere condolences from our family to yours.
Hélène and John Scott
